The irrigation engineering science is considered onc of the oldest engineering sciences that have been studied in Egypt. More than a century and half, the first school for irrigation engineering was established in El-Kanater El-Khairiya in 1858. The civil engineering department has been established in 1926 and the irrigation engineering became one of the six branches of the civil engineering department at that time (irrigation – municipalities – bridges – harbours – survey – railways) until the irrigation department became an independent department since 1948. The initiation of the old hydraulics laboratory started in 1932.
The establishment of the new building of the irrigation and the hydraulics has started in 1950 to satisfy the teaching and research needs of this important branch. The new building included three main laboratories to serve the educational experiments in general, and the different researches in the field of irrigation and hydraulics.
A – Acadamic Activities :
The department staff are teaching different sciences such as; civil drawing, civil engineering, fluid mechanics, principals of irrigation and drainage, hydraulics, irrigation structures and systems, environmental hydraulics, harbours and coastal engineering, inland navigation, water resources management, hydrology and others. These sciences have been delivered for both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The department staff are not only teaching these courses for the civil engineering students but also some courses for petroleum, mining, electrical, mechanical, chemical and architectural engineering students. The department grants postgraduate diplomas in the field of the shared water resources, and the irrigation and drainage. Moreover the department offers. Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in many fields of the water engineering sciences.
B – Industrial and Field Activities :
1. Center of water projects (CWP)
The department staff are teaching different sciences such as; civil
The department staff has contributed to many of the national and regional studies in the water engineering field through the center of studies and design of the water projects. The projects cover a wide range of water and environment related fields such as :
(I) Groundwater studies for the development and the best exploitation of fresh waters.
• Regional groundwater aquifer in North Africa.
• Groundwater aquifer in East Uwaynat Area in the far southwest of Egypt.
• Safe regions of groundwater aquifer in the Delta and the Nile Valley.
• Groundwater aquifer in west Delta and supplying Sadat city with groundwater.
• The influence of the groundwater levels in Greater Cairo’s region on the Egyptian monuments.
(II) Flood protection studies:
• The protection works for the connection from Qina to Abu Tartour from floods and sand movement.
• The protection of 15th of May city from floods.
• The protection of Shuruq city from floods in addition to other new communities.
• The protection of many factories, electrical power plants and roads against floods
(III) River Nile related studies :
The initial studies for the exploitation of the alluvium sediments in Lake Nasser
• The development of the Nile fleet and the improvement of the marine course.
• Participating in the design of many mega projects like Isna Barrages and the earthquakes studies related to High Aswan Dam.
• Planning and designing of many river marinas.
• Environmental impact assessment of the new Nag Hamadi barrages on the nearby villages.
(IV) Studies for the development of the south valley (Toushka)
• Studying the sediment transport at the entrance of the giant pumping station to Sheikh Zayed Canal.
• The protection of Sheikh Zayed Canal from sand movements.
• Studying the execution of the green belt for the protection of the main branch of Sheikh Zayed Canal.
(V) Studies related to harbor and coastal engineering field
Special studies for the protection of the northern coast from the scour in addition to the development of some marinas. Training courses to the personnel of the Egyptian Public Authority for Shore Protection of the Ministry of Water Resources and irrigation.
(VI) Energy related studies
Studies and researches related to the energy of lakes and oceans and the solar ponds.
(VII) Other projects the department staff have contributed individually in different projects in various fields such as; design of many of the hydraulic structures, groundwater wells and sprinkler and trickle irrigation networks and the evaluation of irrigation and drainage projects.
2- The hydraulics laboratory activities
The laboratory services cover many important fields including:
i – Educational services: experiments for the explanation of the natural phenomena and the practical applications related to the subjects of the fluid mechanics, hydraulics, irrigation and drainage systems and harbor engineering.
ii – Research services: the studies of the surface runoff applications, the groundwater movement, the sediment transport, the pressurized pipe networks and the gravity pipe network of the different hydraulic structures, and the tests of the physical models.
iii – Development services: Carrying out several test for the industrial and privates sector, such as; the hydraulic loading of pipes, valves, elbows and all connections, performing pumping tests and pumps characteristics, studying the unsteady applications in the open channels and the pipes, the measurements of salt concentration and measuring the parameters related to soil water plant relationship.
The lab is current under assessment to be accredited by the National Accreditation Council.
3 – Computer Lab
The computer lab at the department offers different programs related to water engineering in addition to CADs and Office with their application in the different engineering aspects.
4- Shared Water Resources Diploma
The potential for conflict over shared water resources is real, so it is important that countries reach agreement. The concept of sharing international water resources to bring integrated water resources management into effect requires three robust pillars. These are: Political pillar, Legal-Institutional pillar, and Operational pillar for technical cooperation.
To cope up with the importance of shared water resources, Cairo University took the lead and established a specialized Shared Water Resources Diploma (SWRD) to broaden the views of the water resources professionals in the mentioned issues in an integrated approach. SWRD offers the knowledge and training about how to move forward in a collaborative, cooperative way to develop appropriate policies for making sure that shared water resources issues are identified and successfully addressed in the coming years.
Water crosses many borders; scientific, political, legal, social, and cultural. Humans have always had trouble addressing cross-border issues, yet cooperation is essential. SWRD is designed to identify and promote tools that can address the critical water issues facing humanity including management of water flow, water quality, and infrastructure development. SWRD also covers international cooperation, especially among countries sharing water resources, as it can help address the shared nature of many water issues.
SWRD has been established through close cooperation between Cairo University and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) in Egypt. MWRI is the governmental body that authorizes water use and is responsible for management and protection of the national water resources, surface and groundwater.
