LIVING IN GREATER CAIRO

Cairo is the capital of Egypt, one of the oldest and most populated cities of the world. The most important features of Greater Cairo include; the Pyramids, the Sphinx at Giza, Cairo University and the ZoologicalGardens also at Giza, Cairo Tower and the New Opera House at Gezira, the National Museum, the Coptic Museum, the Islamic Art Museum, the Citadel and Salah El-Din Mosque , and the old bazaars of Khan El-Khalile in Cairo. Modern series of national and international hotels, restaurants, banks, shopping centers, medical centers and related facilities are available. Egypt has a total area of some one million square kilometers. Confined between longitudes 25o and 35o and latitudes of 22o and 32o, the country is bounded in the north by the Mediterranean Sea, in the south by Sudan, in the west by Libya and in the east by the Red Sea and Israel. Egypt's agriculture with year-round moderate temperature, is one of the oldest in the world. Those interested in water resources would like to see the Aswan Old and High Dams, the new Assuit Barrage, the old Delta Barrage, Fayoum irrigation schemes and lake Qaroun, the modern irrigation schemes at the Delta fringes, irrigation improvement works in the Nile Delta, the forecasting center of the planning sector of MWRI together with the telemetry project. Major irrigation projects in Toshka and Sinai will be of interest to most specialized persons. Living expenses in Cairo varies largely depending on the student preference and taste. Students can rent furnished apartments close to Cairo University or live in hotels. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation MWRI and Cairo University have made available a number of rooms for single students in a modern residential hall in the 6th of October City, 17 kilometer South of Cairo University. |
